Lawrence of Arabia

On August 16, 1888, Thomas Edward Lawrence was born in Tremadog, Wales. He showed an early interest in architecture, historical sites, and artifacts. He and a companion explored the parish churches in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire when they were in their teens. They also kept an eye on construction works in Oxford to make sure that any artifacts discovered were correctly cataloged and given to the Ashmolean Museum.
Lawrence studied history at Oxford's Jesus College for about 4 years. He traveled around France on a bicycle during this period, taking measurements, sketches, and photos of old castles. This would serve as the dissertation's foundation. He conducted a spectacular 1,000-mile solo journey through Ottoman Syria, stopping at Crusader castles, in 1909.

Later, Lawrence who was an author, military officer, and archaeologist, was posted to Jordan during World War One and played a significant part in the Great Arab Revolt. The book Seven Pillars of Wisdom contains many of the experiences Lawrence had while wandering in the Jordanian desert. Visitors may retrace his travels in one of these top Lawrence of Arabia experiences today. He spent a lot of time in Wadi Rum, Azraq, and Amman.

How to Explore Like Lawrence

Start at Amman
Any Lawrence of Arabia journey should start in Amman, Jordan's capital city. When T.E. Lawrence came to the country in 1916, Amman was only a hamlet, and the Arab Revolt was the only reason it was declared the capital. The city is filled with monuments and historic locations. The Roman Theatre is a second-century stone amphitheater that still organizes performances regularly. Along with famous Roman ruins, Amman is home to spectacular Islamic buildings like King Abdullah I Mosque, which was built in 1989. Two more well-known places are the Jordan Gallery of Fine Arts and
the Amman Citadel.

Qsar Al-zra
The popular castle Qsar al-Azraq is located not far from Azraq. T.E. Lawrence briefly lived there while he was stationed nearby in the winter of 1917. In Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence referred to the castle and observed the region's "unfathomable calm." Visitors can gain a better appreciation of the site's significance in Jordanian military history by examining the fortress's ruins. The structure was originally constructed in the third century AD, and it had an altar near the entrance.

The T.E. Lawrence chamber, which was built with arrow holes and tactical views, is also open to visitors. The striking basalt door in the western tower. Lawrence made the spectacular basalt entrance in the western tower well-known in his book Seven Pillars of Wisdom. In addition, there are the ruins of a jail, kitchen, and dining room from the thirteenth century and a mosque.

Aqaba
Aqaba is a picturesque coastal city that blends historical landmarks, five-star resort hotels, and water sports like windsurfing and scuba diving. It is situated right on the Red Sea. Aqaba is a great location for first-time visitors to Jordan since it has direct links to Amman. In 1916, T.E. Lawrence and Prince Feisal acquired control of Aqaba Fort. The fort had a very strong strategic location since it provided good access to the city of Damascus. Today, tourists may visit the fort and essentially retrace Lawrence's movements.

Wadi Rum
Lawrence mostly traveled on a camel during his visit to Jordan. Additionally, camel rides across the Wadi Rum desert are available to tourists. Lawrence is a prolific author. Wadi Rum, which serves as the backdrop for the Lawrence of Arabia movie, has been extensively described by Lawrence in his writings. The Wadi Rum valley is located in southern Jordan and is home to striking scenery that has long inspired painters and travelers.

This desert location is ideal for individuals looking to get away from the city and into the outdoors. Wadi Rum, which covers an area of 720 square kilometers and is home to mountains, rock bridges, dunes, and famous locations like the rumored home of Lawrence of Arabia, is also known as the Valley of the Moon because of the stunning night sky.
