The place was explored more thoroughly by Samuel and Florance Baker in 1863 till 1864 and named the park Murchison after the  " Roderick Murchison"  the president of the Royal Geographical Society. Then the British administration in 1952 founded the National Parks Act of Uganda and the park became the most visited park in Uganda during the 1960s and also one of the most popular parks in Africa. The park contained to be one of the largest homes for wildlife in Africa till the 1970s and the early 80s due to the civil war Uganda sank in. Unfortunately, it affected the wildlife badly and as shown in a 1995 census only 1.3 of elephants have survived, but thanks to the huge efforts of the government, the park now has gained its fame.
