Murchison Waterfalls

Uganda or the Pearl of Africa is surely gifted by nature as it is surrounded by water bodies and most of them are distinguished by the waterfalls. A Waterfall is an area where a mass of water flows over or drops off a cliff swiftly in the course of a stream or a river. Waterfalls in Uganda are unparalleled and eye-catching with breathtaking sceneries and home to many rare animals. There are a lot of waterfalls in Uganda such as Kisizi Waterfall, Ssezibwa Falls, Bwindi Water Falls, Mpanga Falls, Bujagali Falls, Sipi Falls, and Murchison waterfalls.

Murchison waterfalls or Kabalega falls; the most breathtaking waterfalls in Uganda and one of the many wonders of East Africa is located in the Ugandan district Masindi on the northwestern part on the Victoria Nile river and about 32 km east of Lake Albert. The waterfalls lie between two lakes  Lake Albert and Lake Kyoga, the most dramatic view of the waterfalls is at the top as the Nile forces its way violently through a narrow gorge of only 6m (23) wide, then drops about 140 feet in a pool called as  “The Devil’s Cauldron” before tumbling westward into Lake Albert.

Why it is called Kabalega falls:

In 1863-1864 the two English explorers Samuel and Florance Baker visited the place and named the Waterfalls Murchison after the  " Roderick Murchison"  the president of the Royal Geographical Society. However, during the reign of Idi Amin Dada in the 1970s, the name of the waterfalls changed unofficially to be Kabalega Falls in reference to the late king of Bunyoro Kingdom, but it was changed back to Murchison Falls after Adi Amin's downfall.
