This well-known Valley of the Kings is a vast valley concealed by granite escarpments. It was the ultimate resting place for the monarchs of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties and was situated at the new Valley Governorate. According to tradition, there was a dead man who, with the Sun God by his side, travelled through the underworld at night in a boat, and the walls of the tombs were decorated with writings and sceneries that described their journey as well as directives from the dead man. The 63 graves in the valley are rotated open to preserve the murals as much as possible. The valley also has graves for several of Egypt's queens, such as Nefertari, Ramesses II's wife.
