The Story of Kashi Vishwanath Temple

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple holds great renown as a prominent temple in Varanasi. Recognized as the Golden Temple, it is devoted to Lord Shiva. Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, a Maratha monarch, commissioned its construction in 1780.

The original building was destroyed by the army of Qutb Masoud al-Din Aybak in 1194 when Raja was defeated from Kannauj, then the temple was rebuilt by a Gujarati merchant during the reign of Sultan Tammuz Delhi between 1211 and 1266 and was demolished again during the rule of Imamsin Shah al-Sharqi or Iskandar Lodi, then Raja Man Singh built the temple during the rule of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, but the Orthodox Hindus boycotted it because he allowed the Mongols to marry his family, then Raja Todar Maal rebuilt the temple with funding from Akbar in its original location in 1585, and in 1669 Emperor Aurangzeb destroyed the temple and built the Jinvabi Mosque in its place, and the remains of the former temple can be seen in the foundations, columns and the back of the mosque,

In 1742 the ruler of Martha Malhar Rao Holkar decided to demolish the mosque and rebuild the temple at this site, but his plan did not enter into Execution and this is due to the seizure of the land by Nawabs of Lucknow, then in 1750 the Maharaja of Jaipur ordered to survey the site's land to buy the land to rebuild the Kashi Vishwanath temple, but he could not implement his plan, then in 1780 Ahiliabai Hulkar, wife of Malhar Rao's son, built The current structure adjacent to the mosque, During the period between 1833 and 1840 the Ghats Temple and other temples were constructed nearby, and many noble families from various kingdoms of India made generous contributions to the construction of temples.
