Brief History

What is now known as the beautiful city of Amman dates back over nine thousand years ago. Amman was initially a remote settlement in a Neolithic farming town near the Ain Ghazal spring in the hills to the northeast of the modern city of today. Ancient Amman was one of the largest settlements in ancient Jordan; it is three times bigger than modern-day Jericho. Ancient Amman was thriving in arts and figurines as it had skilled artists producing beautiful human sculptures in limestone and plaster. Some of these figurines are now on display in the Jordan National Museum.
