Day 3: Amman-Petra Visit-Wadi Rum
Drive south to visit the main highlight of your Jordan Trip; Petra after breakfast. Petra was lost to civilization until it was rediscovered by the Swiss explorer Burkhardt. It was carved out of the rose-colored Sharah Mountains by the Nabateans. Stone Age man began taking advantage of the region's abundant natural resources around 11,000 BC, especially the wild goats. By 7000 BC, some of the world's earliest farmers were residing in the walled village of Beidha and cultivating cereals and gathering nuts and fruits. When the Edomites established themselves on Umm al-Biyara and other mountain fortresses and constructed a town at Tawilan above 'Ain Musa in the highlands to the north, Petra, however, really rose to prominence in the seventh century BC. Edom, which had previously been ruled by Assyria, Babylonia, and subsequently Persia, formed the foundation of the Nabatean empire, which had Petra as its capital, in the third century BC.
The Nabateans, who were originally from North Arabia, are first mentioned by the first-century BC historian Diodorus, who records that in 312 BC, Antigonus the One-Eyed sent his general Athenaeus against "the land of the Arabs who are called Nabateans," who at the time were a nomadic people who raised cattle and sheep and could survive for extended periods in the desert, where they built a network of covert underground reservoirs. Athenaeus killed a few Arabs there and made off with enormous amounts of frankincense, myrrh, and silver before attacking a certain strong but unwalled rock, possibly the great massif of Umm al-Biyara at Petra, where the Nabateans had left their valuables, elders, women, and children while celebrating a festival. Approximately 150 years later, the Nabateans had established themselves and Petra had become the seat of a well-established state.
Visit the Treasury, the Roman Theater, the Courts, Qasr Bint Pharaoun, Temple of the Winged Lion, and other monuments by walking through the Siq, a confined space between the cliffs, before continuing to a bedouin camp for dinner and the night.
