The Rich History of Rabat

About 3,000 years ago, during the Phoenician expansion the city of Rabat underwent significant growth. Near the ruins of a former Roman city near Salé, Rabat was established in the eleventh century. A sultan of the Almohad tribe built a rabat, or fortification, for his troops close to Salé around the middle of the eleventh century.

In the eleventh century, Sultan Yakub el-Mansur relocated the Almohad Empire's capital to Rabat and used it as a base to conquer Spain and North Africa. This past is still evident in the city's architecture, particularly in the Moorish neighborhoods and in the incomplete mosque and Hassan Tower projects that el-Mansur abandoned. They provide witness to the rich history, opulence, and reputation of the city. Early in the 17th century, Rabat and Salé were combined to establish the Republic of Bou Regreg, which was ruled by Barbary pirates for over two centuries. The majority of Rabat's population at this time was made up of Muslim exiles from Spain.
