The Central Patan Durbar Square

    Patan's Durbar Square or the city of temples because it contains more than 50 temples, the place which is built by different cultures the Newa, Hinduism, and Buddhism.  So it's time to free your soul and travel through time by visiting Patan's Durbar Square.

 

Location:

 

    Patan's central Durbar Square is located at the center of Lalitpur city in Nepal, Patan Durbar Square is one of the three durbar squares in the Kathmandu Valley or the Nepal Valley. Lalitpur is the third-largest city in Nepal. It is known as the city of cultures because most of the cultures met in this city. It is best known for its festivals and feasts. the city is made of fine ancient art.

History:

 

    The history of Patan Durbar Square is not known yet. However the Malla kings of Lalitpur were the main reason for expanding and developing the square during the reign of Sidhi Narsingh Malla, but before the Mallas, there were the Pradhanas who used this square as a crossroad prior it's a settlement by the Mallas. The region was conquered by the Pradhanas, some historians mentioned that the Pradhanas are the ones who constructed the square. Others mentioned that the square is already constructed and prospering before the Pradhanas. 

Architecture:

 

    The Durbar square is a marvel of the Shikara architecture which was used by Newari People. Most of the temples were built in the 17th century and most of them belong to the Malla kings, there are more than 50 temples, every temple and monument has its own style to represent its religion. The most used material in building the square stones, all the floors were made by red stones. 

Top Attractions:

 

There are three main courtyards in the square, these courtyards are a huge example of the ancient Newari architecture. These courtyards are surrounded by amazing impressive temples.

 

Patan is one of the oldest cities in Nepal and it was a center for many cultures, therefore there are many important buildings. These buildings are a reflection of a culture or a religion.  

 

Patan Museum  

This museum is one of the most important museums. It contains several religious structures from thousands of years ago, most of the monuments cost billions of dollars because it is made of gold and bronze. It is considered one of the best museums in the world.

  

Golden temple  

The temple which portraits the Buddhism culture is a spectacular piece of work that was built in the 12th century, it is famous for its décor which is made of gold.  

 

Chyasin Dewal  

This temple is one of the important temples inside the square, it is dedicated to the god Vishnu which was built in the 17th century this temple is a great model for the stone architecture because most of the monuments and sculptures are made from stones. What makes this temple unique the balconies on the second floor.

 

Taleju Bell  

Taleju Bell is a tower located in the square which contains a large stone bell used for all kind of emergencies and when invaders were approaching, also it was rung to announce any kind of information to the citizens of the city.  

 

Sundari Chowk  

One of the unique attractions located in the center of the square was built for ritual ablutions for the king Siddhinarasimha Malla.

 

Vishwanath temple  

Vishwanath temple was built by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla, it was built as a dedication to God Shiva the god of money and trade.  

 

Best Time to visit:

 

The square is easily visited, it can be covered in 2 hours or 3 maximum, The square working days from Saturday to Tuesday from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm

It is recommended to do the visit between October and January as the weather is at it's finest there and the less crowded day is Sunday.

How to reach the Square:

The only airport in Nepal is Tribhuvan International Airport which is 7.3 km from Patan Durbar Square (15 mins).
