The Spectacular Fort of Agra

 

    The Red Fort is one of the magnificent palaces all over the world. It is linked with the most powerful Indian events, the palace was the residence for most of the kingdoms who ruled India. It is the place where the British deposed the last Mughal ruler, and also the first place in India to raise the Indian flag and from there it was announced that India became free from Colonial rule.  

 

Location:

 

    The historic fort is located in the historic and great city Delhi (Old Delhi) in India. It was built as a walled city to protect the city, also it was the capital for the Mughal emperor so you will find a lot of Mughal architectures. The city was the home for the British nobles and the members of the royal court during the British control of India. The city is one of the amazing tourist attractions it is always crowded by tourists, the city is known for its shopping locations, bazaars, Islamic, and Mughal architecture. And it has the largest Mosque in India and one of the extremely fascinating attractions Jama Masjid.  

 

History:

 

    The Fort was constructed as a palace fort by the Fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1638 to be the palace for his new capital Shajahanabad. It was the residence for the Mughal Empire for around 200 years until the British came and conquered India. It took 8 years to complete the construction of the Red Fort after that the fort saw many wars and occupants like Muhammed Shah and Bahadur Shah II, among others. 

Architecture:

 

     The Red Fort is truly one of the magnificent and prolific superstructures all over the world, it is a mixture of the Indian, Islamic, Persian, and Timurid style. The architect of the Red Fort was designed by the great Ustad Ahmad Lahauri who also designed one the most popular architecture in India Taj Mahal. The structure of the Red Fort is octagonal, it has several gates and it is surrounded by an enormous 2 km. wall made of red sandstone which was a huge material for the Fort while the remaining of the structure is made of Marble. The Red Fort is an incredible example of ornamentation and it is said that before the British the Kohinoor diamonds were used in the furnishings but the British took them all. The Red Fort is known for its beautiful gardens and the most important thing in the Fort is the water channel which the Mughal used to call it The Stream of Paradise as it connects many pavilions. 

 

Major Attractions in the Fort:

 

Lahori Gate: Lahori Gate is the main entrance to The Red Fort, one of the masterpieces. It was described as ‘a veil drawn across the face of a beautiful woman’ by Shah Jahan. Every occasion in Delhi the national flag is unfurled and the prime minister makes a speech from its ramparts.

Delhi Gate: The Delhi Gate is the southern public gate of the fort, it is known as the elephant gate as there are two huge statues of elephants on either side of the gate facing each other.

Nahr-i-Bihisht: The place where the Imperial apartments are located in the palace, these imperial apartments consist of a raw of pavilions on a high platform have an amazing view over the lovely Yamuna river.

Rang Mahal: The Rang Mahal or The House of Love, it is the house in the fort where the emperor’s wives and mistresses used to stay, it is very lovely, well painted and decorated with a mosaic of mirrors.

Khas Mahal: Khas Mahal used to be the emperor residence, the residence looks fascinating from inside it contains a huge living room decorated with white Marble and the ceiling was gilded. Khas Mahal is connected to Muthamman Burj, it is a huge tower where the emperor used to make speeches to the people.  

Moti Masjid: The main mosque in the fort, Moti means pearl and Masjid means mosque so it is known as the pearl mosque, it was built in 1659 by Aurangzeb for his personal use. It is a small mosque constructed by using white Marble, it has three domes and three arches.

Hammam: Where the imperial baths are located, what makes it very unique the ceiling and the floors which are lovely constructed by white Marble. It consists of 3 doomed rooms.

 

The Best Time to visit the Fort:

 

    The Fort is opened daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm except for Mondays. It's recommended to visit Delhi between October and March as during this period the weather is at it’s best, it is very pleasant, enjoyable and the flowers are blooming.

 

Light and Sound show:

    One of the most key attractions in the fort is the sound and light show there made in the evenings. It is rated as the number 1 sound and light show in India. It makes you travel through time and shows you the history of the monument in an interesting appealing manner.
